Abdominal Pain
Also known as stomachache, abdominal pain is a common occurrence in children of all ages. It may be either recurrent, in repeated bouts, or acute, when a severe pain starts suddenly. When your child complains of a stomachache, she may be referring to discomfort that arises from any of a number of different organs such as the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, urinary bladder, kidneys or reproductive organs. Causes of stomachache may include:
  • constipation
  • viruses or bacteria
  • improper diet or changes in diet
  • unusual sensitivity to distension or contractions of the intestines
  • stress or anxiety
  • appendicitis
  • urinary tract infection
  • hepatitis
Treatment
Give her a warm water bottle to place on his tummy. Try and get your child to open his bowels. Do not give your child any laxative or anti-nausea medicines without checking with the doctor first. You should consult the doctor if:
  • the pain is persistent
  • the pain is severe or getting worse
  • the pain has become continuous after being intermittent
  • the pain has awakened or kept the child awake
  • the pain is associated with vomiting, loose stool, or blood in the stool
  • there is anything at all abnormal about the urine
  • there have been previous attacks of which the cause has been uncertain
  • for any reason you suspect the possibility of acute appendictis, e.g. associated with fever
